Diagram of the Hypotalamus in the brain. Inside the Hypotalamus are the Hunger Center and Satiety Center

The feeling of being hungry and satiated ( full ) is controlled by the brain.

In the brain there is an organ called the Hypotalamus. In the hypothalamus there are situated many centers which control many body functions such as body temperature, volume of fluids and others. One of the main centers is the hunger and satiety centers. When the Hunger Center is stimulated we feel hungry and when the Satiety Center is stimulated, we feel full.

The hunger center is stimulated by the following:

  1. When glucose levels in the blood decreases
  2. When the stomach is empty

. and conversely the satiety center is stimulated by the following:

  1. When glucose level in the blood is normal or high
  2. When the stomach is full

When the Hunger Center is stimulated, the Satiety Center is depressed and vice versa.
